CONTEXT

Kappa Theta Pi (KTP) is a professional technology fraternity. I worked on a new tool called “KTP LIFE” to help brothers manage their engagement and point goals. KTP brothers are busy college students balancing professional and social growth.

Problem

Currently, KTP brothers rely on a shared spreadsheet, but it’s not designed for tracking their engagement and point goals. Since KTP LIFE was originally made for rush events, it isn’t optimized for managing ongoing participation.

1

Inefficient Navigation has multiple tabs, disorganized, no search method

2

Cluttered interface is overwhelming, rows + columns, no focus on relevant data

3

Ambiguous task guide: scattered, unclear, no call-to-action, uncertainty + next steps

4

Have nothing to assess their progress accross multiple task streams

Goal

Better integrate point tracking into KTP LIFE so brothers can easily manage their tasks, stay engaged, and achieve their goals.

Sucess Metrics

1
Increase Point Goal Achievement
Streamline tracking and goal management in KTP LIFE so more brothers meet their point goals each semester.
2
Reduce Time Spent on Tracking
Simplify the interface to minimize the time brothers spend navigating and updating their progress.
3
Increase User Engagement
Make KTP LIFE an intuitive tool that brothers actively use, increasing overall fraternity participation and satisfaction.

SOLUTION

Introducing Points Page, a tool catered to KTP brothers to help them track their engagement and point goals more efficiently. Through this tool, brothers are better integrated into fraternity life, centralizing all their tasks and necessary activities in one dedicated platform.

1

Streamlines navigation, centralizing taskstevents.

2

Encourages task discovery and engagement.

3

Displays achievements, motivating engagement.

4

Clear task guidance and interaction ready for execution.

RESEARCH

KTP’s 40.6% low engagement rate, with 83.5% of brothers nearly reaching their goals but falling short, led me to conduct 10+ interviews to find out what’s wrong and how we can do better.

1

Not optimized for engagement

Originally designed for rush events, KTP LIFE does not adequately support brothers in managing their engagement and point goals throughout the semester.

2

Fragmented workflows

Platform lacks essential features for tracking points effectively, it requires brothers to switch repeatedly between Google Sheets and the KTP platform, creating unnecessary work.

Signifigance

With over 150 daily users and 450+ active users overall, the current system's inefficiencies make it incredibly challenging for brothers to track their progress and stay engaged.

OPPORTUNITY

A better point-tracking system will lead to more engaged brothers. If they are satisfied, they'll meet their goals, stay involved, and recommend the fraternity, strengthening the community and driving future growth.

Design Principles

1

Simplify Task Management

Organize tasks clearly and reduce complexity for easy tracking.

2

Increase Engagement

Use clear visuals and feedback to keep brothers motivated and active.

3

Centralize Information

Gather all tasks and data in one place for easy access.

4

Support Independent Progress

Provide tools that help brothers manage their tasks on their own.

DECISIONS

Exploration 1: Points Dashboard

Given the need to deliver quickly, I aimed to reduce engineering complexity by leveraging existing design patterns from KTP LIFE while introducing new elements where necessary. I collaborated closely with engineers to adapt these patterns to the Points Page, ensuring a balance between innovation and feasibility.

Exploration 2: Progress Visualization

KTP LIFE originally lacked clear indicators for tracking progress across multiple tasks. To address this, I designed a visual progress tracker that allows brothers to see their progress at a glance. Unlike traditional methods that were disjointed and hard to follow, this new design emphasizes clarity and focus on the current task.

Exploration 3: Task Guidance + Feedback

Originally there was little guidance on how to complete tasks. To improve this, I designed a series of interactive prompts and feedback mechanisms based on user feedback and iterations, ensuring brothers are guided through their tasks with relevant actionable steps.

FINAL DESIGN

Integration w/ Rest of App

Both in a design sense and functionality. To access this feature, its one of the 5 main interfaces accessible by the bottom navigation bar

Main Point Log Page

Users can easily access anything point related on main point log page. Clearly visible what each widget is there for so users can find what they need quick

Leaderboard

Seeing where you compare to other brothers is easy, and includes fun data such as if you're going up/down/abstaining on the leaderboard for friendly competition + motivation.

Explore Quests / My Quests

Clearly can see your completed quests for easy tracking, but also gives opportunity to find more quests if you need.

Events

Interactive details about any upcoming events where points can be earned. Includes helpful information such as hyperlinks, place, and time.

OUTCOMES

Design Handoff

I created detailed handoff documents for engineers and collaborated closely with them to design within time constraints. We held weekly feasibility reviews to validate designs and make sure they understood the details throughout the whole development process.

Takeaways

  1. Adaptability in Team Environments: Working in a dynamic team taught me to quickly adapt and iteratively refine designs based on real-time feedback, ensuring alignment with user expectations and project goals.

  1. Problem-Solving within Constraints: Time and technical limitations spur creative thinking, allowing me to develop practical solutions while recognizing the need for ongoing user testing to ensure effectiveness.

I am so glad you made it this far
hope you enjoyed seeing some of the projects I have gotten to work on.
